Spring Wardrobe Updates & Must Haves

For 2015 I'm on somewhat of a shopping budget. Make that a real budget. There are some big cutbacks happening in the Haute Mommy household.

I usually buy quite a few outfits each season, but they are "outfits" in that the items don't really mix and match with one another to create a real wardrobe. Well, yes, they do - because practically everything in my closet is black, white, or black and white stripes. A little side story: once when I was out shopping with my friend Melissa, I showed her a shirt I was going to buy. Her response was, "It looks just like every other shirt in your closet...?" I got it anyway.

This year I've decided to branch out and add some color and accessories that I normally wouldn't, while saving some money by shopping my closet when I can. I also hope to dress more seasonally rather than just black, white and stripes in varying fabrics and sleeve lengths. For spring, that means adding some color.

Here is what I'm buying for spring and some tips on all of them. In keeping with my budget, all of the options shown below are pocketbook-friendly and under $100. Most are available at Nordstrom or stores like Loft and Old Navy.

White Jeans - a spring and summer must that I live in until fall. Look for a thicker quality fabric so that all of the ummm....imperfections (cough cough cellulite and jiggle) of your thighs and rear are hidden. Or wear knee length Spanx, which I've been known to do.

Boyfriend Jeans - or another jean you can cuff in a medium or light wash. I bought a pair of William Rast destroyed about two years ago, but late last summer the rip in the knee finally tore so much that they looked a little too distressed to be worn out of the house. I just ordered two styles of the Vigoss. Gap has quite a few options too. Wait until they go on sale or stop by an outlet if there is one close to you.

Dark Skinny Jeans - I have a pair of J Brand mid-rise that I bought last winter and I love them. They're just stretchy enough and haven't lost their color. Wash them inside out on gentle and only wash them every three or so wears. Good quality jeans will last at least five years.

Casual Skirt - I'm going to go fora shorter length that I can wear all summer. I know a lot of people like maxi skirts, but they make me look short and wider than I am.

Denim Jacket - I bought one right after Georgia was born, almost four (four!!!) years ago and I've never worn it. Rather than let it sit for another year it's either getting worn or donated.

Tanks and Tees - I buy less expensive options from Old Navy and replace them every year. Of course I always do black, white, charcoal, navy and a stripe. This year I'm going to do coral and mint, or another pastel.

Chambray Shirt - I love these for spring! The classic colors are a spring must, and when summer hits you can roll up the sleeves and wear them with shorts. I have a pink one in my closet, but I need to get another faded denim. I'm also going to look for another pastel. If you don't want to spend on these, look for a sale at Old Navy. They will look as good as an LL Bean or J Crew if you double starch them; if you don't, they wrinkle too easily. I try to find button-downs with no chest pockets since the pockets add more bulk than I want to my chest, and they are more difficult to layer.

Cardigans - As much as I love neutrals, I love a bright one with the chambray sleeves rolled over it. I'm just imagining myself in a lot of coral, and I saw a pretty one at Loft. I'm also going to keep an eye out for an after-winter sale to pick up some really nice quality in black and tan although they probably won't get worn until next fall. All of the options above are available in coral and other spring-brights.

Flats - Santa replaced my worn out black Tory Burch Revas, but I may also try out a nude color for spring and summer. Haven't decided yet because black really does go with everything. I also have red to add color to my prison wardrobe - I mean stripes! I also really like the look of leopard loafers. Target usually has some, so I'll check them to see how comfy they are.
Sandals - Metallic sandals in a not-too-crazy style can be worn year after year. I have some silver Tory Burch that are still in good condition. I just checked out my nude wedges, though, and saw that cork is falling off in chunks. I've seriously had them forever, so it's about time for an update, anyway.
Jewelry - I hardly ever buy because the things I have go with everything. I love my clear iridescent Kendra Scott Danielles and honestly wear them every day. I might try some sort of statement necklace this year, but I tend to buy necklaces and never wear them. We'll see what my budget says, but amazing deal on the Kate Spade necklace shown above.
Scarves - I have a ton of scarves that never get worn. But! I strolled by Charming Charlie and saw about ten of the cutest nautical themes (of course!) so I'm going to make myself wear some this year. They're white and different shades of blue with coral accents. LOVE!
I really hope that I'll branch out from my usual palette of just two colors. If you see anything I should add to this or find a good deal for something on my list, please let me know!
