Make Your Own Emi-Jay Boutique Hair Ties With Creaseless Elastic

Ever since Jennifer Aniston was spotted in an Emi-Jay hair tie, they've popped up everywhere. We even gave away Emi-Jay at our original Favorite Things Party! I've said before that they lose elasticity quickly and that I don't like paying boutique prices for hair accessories that I lose on a daily basis.

I've had a DIY post from The Superettes pinned (follow me!) for a long time, and after losing my last creaseless hair tie, I decided to make my own.

You'll need 5/8 inch fold over elastic. You can buy it at any craft or sewing store, and Etsy has tons and tons of options. It comes in every color, polka dots, stripes, chevron, glitter, tie-dye, you name it. You'll also need a ruler or measuring tape and some scissors. I bought a yard for less than $2 shipped. I bought basic black because I'm boring and that's the color I wear most.

Measure and cut off 9 inches of elastic for each ponytail tie or 20 inches for a headband (like the one I got in my April Birchbox subscription).

Fold the elastic in half, keeping the shiny or pretty side on the outside.

Tie a knot on the end.

I found it easiest to tie the knot about halfway down the loop and push it to the end to get it as tight as possible.

Singe the ends with a lighter by holding the lighter close to the ends. I say "close to" because these will catch on fire. Don't ask me how I know this! Also - don't touch or lay it on anything that will melt or burn. They stay HOT for a few seconds.

There you have it! A boutique style hair tie for less than a quarter! (Ends were not yet singed on my photo above).

What other copycat DIYs have you tried that worked?
